Following a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake centered around Sagaing, central Myanmar, the local humanitarian organization Grace Hands Myanmar has officially announced its readiness to launch an immediate field response. Amidst this natural disaster, the organization is making every effort to ensure the safety and security of the public and to execute emergency relief operations as quickly as possible.
“Central Myanmar has been hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, causing significant damage to numerous families and homes. The affected areas are densely populated, and a quake of this magnitude is likely to have severe impacts. We are trying to verify exact conditions from our field staff and stand ready to respond as soon as the scale and location of the disaster become clearer. Grace Hands Myanmar is deeply concerned about the impact this disaster will have on children and families. Our staff are trained in disaster response and have already mobilized to assess urgent needs. Please keep the survivors and our staff in your prayers,” said U Saw James, Executive Director of Grace Hands Myanmar.
Local communities on the ground are feeling extremely unsafe and are gripped by fear of another imminent earthquake. With minor aftershocks continuing to rattle the region day after day, public anxiety over the possibility of another major tremor is mounting. “Due to the continuous daily aftershocks on the ground, local residents are extremely worried about the possibility of another large earthquake striking,” said U Naing Lin Aung from the Communications Team of Grace Hands Myanmar.
Amidst these complex and challenging circumstances, Grace Hands Myanmar has actively initiated business continuity and disaster preparedness plans to prevent any disruption to its operations. All personnel within Myanmar have been accounted for and confirmed safe, while the security team closely monitors the local situation. The organization places its utmost priority on the well-being and safety of affected children and families.
“We are particularly worried about children who may have been trapped under rubble while traveling to school and separated from their parents. Our immediate priority is to ensure that affected individuals have access to food, shelter, clean drinking water, and healthcare services. Furthermore, it is essential to collaborate closely with local partner organizations to facilitate assistance,” U Saw James added.
To provide prompt humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in designated target areas, Grace Hands Myanmar has allocated 50% of its organizational funds exclusively for this response. To accurately assess and identify urgent needs on the ground, the organization is working in close cooperation with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and local social networks to implement effective relief operations.
